Lockdown Learning: Water Play

If you’re running low on lockdown learning ideas this water play activity is the perfect way to learn whilst having fun.

Kids love learning and experimenting with water, but the clean/dry up after can be laborious at the best of times. So, why not try this water in a bag trick/experiment. Not only is it a relatively dry, water activity it’s also easily adjusted to multiple age groups. However, always make sure children are supervised.

What You’ll Need For This Water Play Activity

A single zip lock plastic bag.

Sharpened pencils are perfect for this, but you could also use skewers.

Instructions

The simplicity of this activity is key.

  1. Fill the zip lock bag ¾ full with water. Make sure to let the air out and then zip it tight.
  2. Hold up bag of water and begin to push pencils all the way through the bag of water (do not pull pencils out again until ready).
  3. Continue to put as many pencils as you like through the bag.
  4. Allow older children to try pushing them through in different directions and then admire the structure they create.
  5. If you wish to watch the water falls flow (my kids really enjoyed this bit). Go outside and start pulling the pencils out.

Level Up

Why not try adding sugar, oil and and different colours of food dye to the water for an extra element of intrigue. This will create the perfect visual for discussing topics such as liquid density and why the different fluids and colours mix or separate.

  1. That’s a fun experiment to do with water – I never thought of adding sugar, oil and different colours of food dye though. Might have to give it a go with Sophie at some point. #kidsandkreativity

I always find the more visually appealing it is the more likely they are to join in!

my kids love playing with water, but it always ends with a massive mess for me to clear up. Might have to give this one a go! Thanks for sharing at #KidsandKreativity x
