Staying At Home: Wellness Check

Home wellness is that latest buzz tag. We all know that making healthy choices are vital to our wellness blah blah. But how often do you check yourself before you wreck yourself? Staying home for long periods can have a detrimental affect on even the healthiest individual. If you’re feeling a bit bleugh try and focus on the following five things in our home wellness check, to up those happy hormones.

greens

High in fibre and filled with vitamins K, C, and B-complex. Salad veg, like lettuce are proven to make you happy! Eating your greens will aid your digestion and is a great way to up potassium and calcium levels. Plus a side of salad with a plate of nuggets is like nothing happened, right?

happiness

You might be struggling to eat all the lettuce, especially whilst being stuck at home all day. But maintaining your morale is vital for wellness! During periods of isolation, you still need to be making sure you get at least 30 mins of outdoor time. This can be anything from time spent in the garden, on your balcony, even by an open window. But preferably you want to also get moving. Practice some yoga breathing techniques and stretches in the most quiet area of your home. This may mean locking yourself in the toilet. So, take a comfy mat/towel with you to lay down.

Don’t feel afraid or selfish to want to be happy! But be mindful that simply focussing on the need to be happy can in itself be energy depleting. Make a note of the things you need to feel well and good within yourself and set aside a wee bit of lavish money. This could just be £1 a week, which at the end of the month you use to buy yourself some nice coffee or to collect and contribute to something bigger like a nice, bunch of flowers to brighten up your home.

Talk

If like me you’re “stuck” at home with the kids, talking is probably the last thing you want to do. However, if you’re self isolating alone make sure to keep in touch with friends and family through face time. It’s hugely important that you maintain those human connections. I get my daily check ins through my Instagram stories. There’s something hugely therapeutic about having a mental dump on your social media feed.

exercise

Up your indoor activity by doing a youtube workout. Or create a high intensity circuit using the stairs and tins of food for variety and to up the intensity levels of your work out. Our favourite form of exercise as a family is to follow dance routines on TikTok.

water

Stay hydrated! I’ve put this last on our home wellness list, not because it’s the least important but because I find it the hardest to do. But, consider this: our brains are 75% water! staying hydrated is essential for us to feel and think well!

“Water is also essential for delivering nutrients to the brain and for removing toxins. When the brain is fully hydrated, the exchange of nutrients and toxins will be more efficient—thus ensuring better concentration and mental alertness.”

-Student Health & Counselling Service

Set yourself some water goals or leave a glass ready by the kitchen tap. Get the whole family on board and maybe even make it a competition! A good level of water consumption is vital for the mental well being of all ages.

Ultimately be kind to yourself and stay well. What are your tips for home wellness?

Much love,

Berrit x
